Shimla – the name just brings fond memories of snow caped mountain peaks, lakkad bazaar, alluring green meadows, pleasant climate; I can go on and on. Yes, it’s true that modernisation and industrialization has shown an impact on the hills, but still you can do a lot of things while in Shimla. There is something mystical in Shimla that I can never turn down an offer to visit the “Queen of Hills”. So, when the friends insisted to celebrate my birthday over there, what more could I ask for? Shimla offers something for all – museum and art galleries for artistic people, mall road for a great shopping experience, nature walks for nature lovers – there is something for everyone. Well, to reach Shimla, we had tempo traveller that reached well before time and so we all jumped aboard to make fond memories of the place. The distance is around 118 KMs but I bet that you would not feel tired for you would be ever welcomed by picturesque views.
Well, we were going in May, but one can go anytime as the weather is pleasant all throughout the year with the months of December and January being extremely cold. Winters are a time to bask in snow and well monsoons are a visual treat as the whole place turns to be green.
1. Summer Hills
This place is a picturesque township located just 5 kms from the ridge and what a breathtaking views it lets you enjoy. Summer hills can be aptly called a lush green carpet – wherever you see, it’s greenery everywhere. It’s a visual treat to eyes. We trekked and went for nature walk early in the morning and what a beautiful sunrise we could see from the top, it was simply overwhelming.
2. Annandale: Golfers’ Paradise
Once a place for adventure sports during British rule, this place is now a haven for golf enthusiasts and players. Racecourse has been converted into a mini golf course and offers beautiful scenery of the place besides also acting as a helipad.
3. Jakhoo Hills
One of the major tourist attractions in Shimla, Jakhu hill is situated at a height of around 8000 feet and attracts people for its temples, scenic beauty and above all trekking. The 108 feet tall statue of Lord Hanuman gets people offering prayers from all walks of life. The trekking is a short distance and it is advisable to take it up only during the day as it gets quite dark by evening. 4. Naldehra and Shailey Peak
To catch a glimpse of the most amazing sunrise and sunset, head Naldehra. Nestled amidst dense deodar forests, Naldehra is home to a wide variety of Flora and Fauna. If you are looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city life, this place is no less than a heaven. The serenity and calmness of the place relaxes and rejuvenates one and all. This place is best for watching sunrise and sunsets
5. Chadwick Falls:
Situated at an altitude of 1586 meters above sea level, Chadwick falls is amidst dense forest of pine and deodar trees. When you visit during the monsoons, the increased water levels make the place look more beautiful and alluring. It’s surely a treat to one’s eyes.
6. Himalayan Bird Park
For the nature lovers, one must to visit site is the Himalayan Bird Park. It is open only in summers( we were the lucky ones!) and you can spot both native and exotic birds in the premises. The park opens its gates for all at 10:00 AM and remains open until 6:00PM.
The winter sports capital, a popular name for Kufri, it is situated around 2622 meters above sea level. Nestled in the foothills of Himalayas, Kufri once belonged to the Nepal Kingdom. In winters, you can try your hands at ice skating and skiing. The picturesque views are also breathtaking. It must be in every visitors list while coming to Shimla.
Famous for home to the highest cricket pitch in the world, Chail is a picturesque location outlined by lush green deodar and pine trees offering a perfect ambiance for a calm and serene stay. Chail is also famous for its architectural magnificence and as it is at a higher altitude than Shimla, one can enjoy the city lights when it gets dark in the evening.
8. Tara Devi Temple
Tara Devi Temple is not only frequented for spiritual gains, but due to its amazing locale. Situated atop a hill, one can reach the temple via Shimla Kalka Highway to rejuvenate one’s body, mind and soul.
9. Johnnie’s wax Museum
Well, everyone wishes to visit Madame Tussauds, London, being in India, you can visit its very own Madame Tussauds here in Shimla. Yes, you heard me right! Not only Indian but here you will find wax figurines of international icons as well. It’s an interesting place to visit for sure.
10. Mall Road
Last but not to forget, the most important part of every person’s Shimla visit is the Mall road and what better place than it to shop for souvenirs and other local items for self, friends and family. In the evening, it is buzzing with people and everywhere it seems there is life. One can take a stroll, do shopping or simply enjoy eating the local delicacies roadside or restaurants.
